There’s a persistent myth that you need to be 21 years old to rent a hotel room. Maybe it comes from the fact that other travel necessities have age restrictions, including rental cars; maybe it’s because a few hotels do hesitate when it comes to young guests.
However, there are plenty of places that will start renting to you as soon as you’re 18. If you’re planning a vacation, road trip or spring break extravaganza, here’s a list of hotels that allow 18 year olds to check in.
Youth Hostels
Youth hostels are meant for young people, so you don’t have to worry about being 21. Some of them allow check-ins by guests as young as 16!
Airbnb
The only age restriction on Airbnb is the one in their Terms of Service, which requires you to be 18 to join the site. However, watch out for individual homeowners who might have different limits in their “house rules” section.
Best Western
Best Western has no age restrictions.
Motel 6
Motel 6 generally allows 18-year-olds, but certain locations around Fort Lauderdale, San Diego and San Marcos will require you to be 21. The exception is if you’re enlisted and can provide a valid military ID.
Four Seasons
Four Seasons doesn’t have any official rules about 18-year-olds checking in, so some locations will allow it while others will not. You’ll need to call your specific destination and ask.
Drury Inn and Suites
There’s no minimum age requirement at Drury Inn and Suites, but some individual locations might have a rule against it.
La Quinta Inn and Suites
La Quinta Inn and Suites is another brand where the age restrictions can vary by location. However, it should be noted that 18-year-olds can apply for the Wyndham rewards program sponsored by their parent company, so that might be an argument in your favor if a hotel clerk tries to deny you at the counter.
Hilton Hotels
Hilton Hotels include but are not limited to:
– Conrad
– Doubletree
– Embassy Suites
– Hampton Inn
– Homewood Suites
– Home2 Suites
Many of these branches will allow 18-year-olds to check in. There’s no official policy against it.
Marriott
Marriott Hotels include but are not limited to:
– Marriott
– Courtyard
– Springhill Suites
– Residence Inn
– Fairfield Inn and Suites
Their age rules vary by location.
Intercontinental Hotels Group
Intercontinental Hotels include but are not limited to:
– Candlewood Suites
– Holiday Inn
– Hotel Indigo
– InterContinental
– Kimpton Hotels and Resorts
– Staybridge Suites
They don’t have a standard check-in age, but some individual branches might have policies against 18-year-olds.
Red Roof Inn
Some Red Roof Inn locations will allow 18-year-olds. Others will ask that you’re 21. It should be noted that the Red Roof Inn rewards program is open to anyone 18 or older.
Millennium Hotels and Resorts
Millennium Hotels don’t have any age limits.
These are just a few hotels that allow 18 year olds to check in. These don’t require you to be 21 years old to book a room. If you don’t see your favorite establishment on the list, however, it doesn’t automatically mean that you’d be barred from checking in. Call them and ask!
